Looking for a taste of classic India with decor to match? Then you need to head to Doha Gymkhana located at Al Jomrok Boutique Hotel in Souq Waqif.
This impressive venue quietly opened a few months ago in Souq Waqif – we are a little loathe to talk about it because its warmed our hearts with its style and service. Because of its location it can’t quite be a hidden gem but we secretly wish it was!
The decor is modern with touches of the bygone British Raj era. From sepia photographs, veranda furniture, and wooden swing, to the impressive antiqued mirror wall – there is a lot to take in. Even the restaurant logo channels retro feels with its one rupee stamp background.
The dining room is a story of two halves; the sleek side is perfect for elegant dining, whilst the Indian-style veranda has garden furniture to match, and a casual air to it. It’s quaint, charming and yet tastefully modern – surprisingly it works really well.
The internal veranda has some great tables for people-watching. Our tip, sit at the corner table and enjoy views across Souq Waqif Square with Fanar in the background – it’s a perfect spot for a cup of tea or masala chai! Currently, they have outdoor seating for diners to enjoy the cooler evenings and watch the world go by.
The menu is compact, with classic Indian dishes and a creative (if expensive) beverage menu. Prices are reasonable, particularly for the location, and service is exceptional.
The Gymkhana Chaat appetiser is a decent portion, and the flavour was excellent with a tangy spicy hit to it. However, it needed more, it lacked a textural contrast which it desperately needed for that chaat quality that we all love!
The Butter Chicken was creamy and delicious, paired with hot Naans straight from the Tandoor. For Butter Chicken enthusiasts this rendition may be a little too fruity, however it was great quality and cooked perfectly. Excellent service by the staff at Doha Gymkhana who provided hot Naans straight from the Tandoor – what an experience!
Do yourself a favour the next time you are ordering at an Indian restaurant – order your favourite curry dish and order (nay demand!) piping hot Naan or Roti.
Dessert was a Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, which looked pretty on the plate. Flavour was good, but the texture was a little grainy for our liking. The crispy apples helped to cut down some of the sweet creaminess of the Cheesecake.
Despite not having a perfect meal, in terms of personal flavour preferences, this place is definitely worth repeated visits.
Quality food, excellent service, and great atmosphere – when you talk about the trifecta of a perfect restaurant Doha Gymkhana ticks all the boxes! It’s our new favourite!
